- The First Deaf Women Ascent -
On June 13, 1991, Heidi became the first deaf woman in history to reach the top of the 20,320-feet summit of Denali, also known as Mt. McKinley, in Alaska. She and her group were snowed in for four days at 17,200 feet, waiting for the weather to clear. She made it to the summit 17 days after she left the base, and at the top, she unfolded a banner, DEAF WOMAN, A PARADE THROUGH THE DECADES, which was developed from Mabs Holcomb’s and Sharon Kay Wood’s book of the same title.
